The mobile payment system Google Wallet is back in the game. After Google has worked on a fix to prevent potential abuse to a user’s account, Google restored the ability to add new prepaid cards to the wallet.

Before the fix, a flaw in the magament of prepaid cards would allow an unauthorized user to access and use fund from the Google Wallet prepaid card of a lost of stolen Google Wallet smartphone. The issue is connected to the Google Wallet prepaid card being tied to the device and not to the user.

Google explains in a recent blog post: “We restored the ability to issue new prepaid cards to the Wallet. In addition, we issued a fix that prevents an existing prepaid card from being re-provisioned to another user. While we’re not aware of any abuse of prepaid cards or the Wallet PIN resulting from these recent reports, we took this step as a precaution to ensure the security of our Wallet customers.”

Google also assured users that the Google Wallet is safe to use for mobile phone payments, and has advantages over plastic cards and wallets being used by many today.

If you think of it, losing your credit card or wallet would also mean that the one who holds it can have access to your funds. The difference with using a mobile payment system is that you can actually lock your device to protect the funds in it. If they cannot use the device, they cannot access your funds.
